Senior Program Director
Kelly Ernst
Kelly Ernst joined the Sheldon Chumir Foundation as Senior Program Director in December 2008. Kelly’s academic background includes a Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.A. from the University of Calgary. He complemented his academic work by completing the Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program at the Harvard Business School, in Boston, Massachusetts. His dissertation, thesis, research, and professional work have led to his expertise in research and evaluation, as well as interest in strategic and leadership development.Kelly’s leadership experience includes founding and being president of his own consulting firm, The Strategic Intelligence Alliance. Prior to this, he led a project for 10 years that became the Canadian Outcomes Research Institute. He was its first Executive Director, then President and CEO. Kelly has also sat on a number of boards of directors where he has held a number of executive positions.
Kelly’s experience includes private sector, government, and NGO work across Canada and internationally. He has given numerous presentations and written various publications, on topics including: program evaluation, research, business ethics, strategic leadership, outcome model and related organizational development, not-for-profit organizational development, business development, accreditation compliance, program design, and diversity development. Kelly has lectured at numerous national and international conferences. He has also co-chaired national conferences and helped organize an international conference.
Kelly has contributed to the community through his board work, holding various executive positions and by fundraising for a number of organizations. He was a co-founder of an endowment fund for a youth service in Calgary. He assisted in the development of an executive coaching project for executive directors and CEOs of not-for-profit and charitable organizations. His volunteerism has helped set-up various organizations and consulted in their development strategies. He has been involved in political advocacy at a number of levels over the past 20 years.
For recreation, Kelly travels extensively, curls, and takes language lessons. He has learned Spanish in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. He has French language training from Le Centre Universitaire d’Etudes Françaises, L'Universite Perpignan, Perpignan, Languedoc-Roussillon, France; and the International Language Schools of Canada, Montréal, Québec.
