2001 - 2002 Media Fellow: Bob Bergen

The Sheldon M. Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership takes pleasure in announcing the appointment of Calgary freelance writer Bob Bergen, as its second 2001 - 2002 Media Fellow. Mr. Bergen's four-month Media Fellowship will commence in October 2001.

Mr. Bergen is embarking on a nation-wide research study that will examine Canadian newspaper unions' and guilds' ability to deal with ethical issues facing journalists in an age of concentrated news media ownership. Canadian newspaper unions' and guilds' ability to address labour and management issues has an established history. On the other hand, when it comes to ethical issues, the question arises as to whether anyone is watching the media watchdog. Bob's nation-wide study will research the question of whether Canada's newspaper unions or guilds can address journalists' ethical dilemmas.

Mr. Bergen has a lengthy journalistic background, which includes twenty years with the Calgary Herald as both a Staff Writer and an Editorial Writer. During his career Mr. Bergen has also undertaken foreign assignments in Bosnia & Croatia, Japan, West Germany, Cyprus and Egypt. Mr. Bergen holds a Masters of Communications Studies degree and is currently completing a Ph.D. degree in Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.
