2001 - 2002 Public Policy Fellow: Alison L. Jeffrey

The Sheldon M. Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership takes pleasure in announcing the appointment of Alison L. Jeffrey, as its 2001 - 2002 Public Policy Fellow. The four-month Fellowship will commence in September 2001.

Ms. Jeffrey's project is entitled: Seeking the Common Ground: The Convergence of People, Politics, and Profit. The project explores the perceived disparity among the public sector, the private sector, and the community sector in this age of "globalization". Critics claim that this imbalance, caused by the corporate sector's encroachment upon the role of the state and the rights and freedoms of individuals, places democracy at risk. If this is true, can corporate codes of conduct and greater citizen participation be used to strike a more democratic balance among government, corporations and citizens?

Ms. Jeffrey holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta and in April of this year completed a Master of Business Administration specializing in International Business, also at the University of Alberta. Her working background has included positions at both the federal and provincial government levels, with assignments in trade policy, energy policy and intergovernmental affairs. In the not-for-profit sector, Ms. Jeffrey has served as External Affairs Manager with the Alberta Lung Association and has been active in community organizations in areas such as adult literacy, promoting responsible business, and peace and human rights.

According to Chumir Foundation President Dr. Marsha Hanen: "Alison Jeffrey brings a keen mind and strong commitment to her project, designed to explore the changing roles of the corporation, the state and the citizen in relation to democratic participation. I believe that her work will be a catalyst for finding the common ground that so many find lacking at present."
